Meet the New Administration! | Deann Parsons and Marsha Penn

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

There are two new assistant principals in town, get familiar by reading their bios!

Deann Parsons

Deann Parsons is a daughter of the soil, born and raised on Tortola, Br. Virgin Islands. She received her primary education at Meyers Primary School, now Enis Adams Primary School and her Secondary Education at BVI High School, now Elmore Stoutt High School.

Upon graduation she traveled to the United States where she attained a Bachelor

of Science Degree in Biology from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. Ms. Parsons returned to the BVI in 1995 and began her teaching career at the BVI High School. She taught subjects like Integrated Science, Biology,

Human and Social Biology, and Agricultural Science. She

taught all levels from Grade 7 -12.

During her career at Elmore Stout High School Ms. Parsons held the positions of Year

Head (3 rd and 5th Form) and Head of the Science Department. She also worked closely with her

beloved Carlisle House 4 and to this day would tell anyone that she still “bleeds gold”. In 2016,

she returned to the US and attended Bowie State University where she received a Master of

Arts Degree in Teaching. During that time, she also received her teaching certification.

Ms. Parsons believes all students can learn and it is the responsibility of teachers and all

other stakeholders to create an environment where students can reach their maximum

academic potential. She believes that learning is a dynamic and engaging phenomenon

involving teachers, students, and the environment.

When teachers make education fun and interactive, students are engaged, and therefore learning takes place. In the classroom, she encourages her students to be critical thinkers who are creative and think “outside of the box.” As an administrator, Ms. Parsons endeavours to work closely with administration, teachers, counsellors, parents, and students to build strong relationships that will transcend the entire scope of education.

Marsha Penn

Dear ESHS Family,

My name is Marsha Penn aka Ms. Penn, and I am truly humbled to introduce myself as one of the new Ag., Assistant Principal of Elmore Stoutt High School for the 2020 – 20201 academic school year.

I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of the Virgin Islands; I also hold a Master’s degree in Information Systems Management from DeVry Keller Graduate School of Management.  For more than twenty- four (24) years, I have worked as a mentor, tutor and an educator, but I consider my most important role to be that of a disciplinarian with an emphasis on Positive Student Behaviour Modification Education.

I have taught grades 7 – 12 in the subject area of mathematics at Elmore Stoutt High School for the past twenty years.  I have also taught part-time as an adjunct lecturer for two prestigious tertiary institutes one being the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) in my home town of St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands during my

college years and most recently at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

My most fulfilling job is being a parent to my sixteen year old son Seon Lettsome.   Every student that entered my office over the past five years I treated as my own. One of the reasons I became an educator is because I was inspired by my aunt, teacher Annette Malone Kelly who herself served her community as a teacher for over 30 plus years. I also wanted to give back to my community by becoming a teacher and educating the younger generation whom I see as the future of this territory.  My goal is to work with each member of the ESHS family, which includes persevering students, an extremely dedicated staff, and a supportive school community.  I am interested in changing the climate and bridging the gap between our local community public and private, ESHS and all the stakeholders involved.  I feel very fortunate, to be part of the ESHS RAMS nation and to support the students, teachers, staff and families. This upcoming school year brings with it all the excitement of new beginnings, new experiences and new

opportunities to learn and grow. Every teacher, principal, staff member and parent plays an important role in making this year a great one for our students.   Once again I look forward to working with each one of you, thank you for your support and have a wonderful school year!

Sincerely yours,

Marsha Penn
